Manufacturer Dead-Pixel Warranty Policies, Explained
Almost no manufacturer replaces a display for a single dead pixel. Here's the concept behind pixel-defect policies, and how to find the actual numbers for a specific product.
A single dead pixel feels like it should be an obvious defect — but display panel manufacturing has enough natural variance that essentially no manufacturer treats "zero defective pixels" as the standard. Almost every warranty policy sets a minimum defect count before a display qualifies for replacement, and that number is specific to the manufacturer, sometimes the individual product line, and changes over time.
Why a threshold exists at all
Most manufacturers base their policies on a version of the ISO 9241-307 standard, which classifies displays into pixel fault classes (roughly, Class I allows zero defects, down to looser classes that permit a handful of bright, dark, or stuck sub-pixels depending on panel size). Manufacturers pick which class applies to which product, and consumer-grade panels are very rarely sold at the strictest class — the cost of guaranteeing zero-defect panels at scale would be reflected in the price.
What tends to matter across policies
Even though exact numbers vary, most manufacturer policies weigh a similar set of factors:
- How many defective pixels, and whether they're "bright" (stuck on) or "dark" (dead) — bright defects are usually held to a stricter threshold since they're more visually obvious.
- How close together multiple defects are — a cluster of defects close to each other is often treated more seriously than the same count spread across the panel.
- Where on the screen — some policies apply a stricter threshold to a defined "central zone" of the panel than to the outer edges.
- The panel size and resolution — larger, higher-resolution panels generally get a slightly higher allowed defect count, since they have proportionally more pixels.
What to actually do
Before buying, search the specific manufacturer's name plus "pixel policy" or "dead pixel warranty" — reputable manufacturers publish this as a standalone support document, and it's worth five minutes to read before you need it. Photograph any defect you find with the dead pixel test or stuck pixel test running, note its position on the panel, and check it against the policy before assuming either "it's fine" or "it's covered" — both assumptions are wrong often enough to be worth verifying.
